This is a waveform of a 1200 byte ping.

The yellow trace is the border router TX. The blue is the client
TX. The purple is the border router's UART.

The timing on this is:

border-tx:        56ms
client-tx:        56ms
border overhead: 136ms
slip-tx:         108ms  (115200 bps)

Running the UART faster is going to be the next best way to get ping
times down.

Also here are the results of ping flood tests:
